Joonas Ilmasti

Joonas Ilmasti is a lawyer, economist and an entrepreneur with an extensive experience in cryptocurrency regulation & economics, designing compliance & risk management programs in multi-jurisdictional operating environments, technology law and investment analysis of cryptocurrencies.

Joonas previously worked as the Chief Compliance Officer and General Counsel at LocalBitcoins, the world’s largest P2P bitcoin trading platform where he oversaw regulatory issues while founding and managing the compliance & AML investigations teams of the company. His time at LocalBitcoins witnessed major regulatory changes for the crypto industry when the 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive of EU was implemented into national legislation.

He currently runs a consultancy company btcadvisor.net focusing on regulatory, business development and investment analysis for cryptocurrency businesses and institutional investors. His consultancy service is part a global network of independent and highly experienced cryptocurrency professionals.

Joonas thinks Bitcoin is the hardest, soundest, and most cryptographically secure money the world has ever seen, and its effects will reach deep into our culture.

He became interested in Bitcoin in 2014 through his long-term interest in Austrian economics and soon co-founded an investment research & newsletter focusing on Bitcoin as a digital gold and a hedge against economic uncertainty.

Joonas has also worked at a boutique law firm in Finland where he founded and led the firm’s blockchain & DLT practice.

He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting & Finance from London School of Economics and a Master of Laws degree from University of Turku.
